Great for: very fit, experienced hikers wanting a serious challenge

Cons: steep ascent profile, poor acclimatization schedule, very demanding

This route starts on the southern side of the mountain and is the most physically challenging of all the routes. Trails are not gentle meandering and its a “straight up” route. Umbwe route has poor acclimatization and is only recommended for strong, confident, experienced trekkers who are looking for a real physical and different challenge.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate – Umbwe camp

Hiking: 5-7 hours

Overnight Altitude:  2100m

Day 2: Umbwe Camp – Barranco Camp

Hiking: 4-5 hours

Overnight Altitude:  3976m

Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Hiking: 4-5 hours

Overnight Altitude:  3995m

Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Hiking: 4-5 hours

Overnight Altitude:  4673

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Hiking: 7-8 hours to summit – 4-6 hours to Camp

Overnight Altitude:  3068m

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate

Hiking: 3-4 hours
